Current Volunteer Opportunities:
Help the Society's Archivist and Photograph Curator sort through fascinating collections of papers and photographs so they may be used by researchers. Many of these collections would be more fun with two people working together, so recruit a friend! The work is conducted in the Archives on the 3rd floor of the Municipal Building at 138 East Main Street, Mt. Horeb. The building has free parking on the street and an elevator.
Archives Cataloging Assistants
All of the interesting artifacts, papers and photographs donated to the Historical Society ultimately go into a computer catalog program called Past Perfect. We will give you specific training and ongoing support. It is a lot like filling in a 3×5 card. Your contribution in this area is very valuable because it enables us to get the artifacts, papers and photographs in to the hands of a researcher – quickly. It's why we're here and you can help make it happen. This job may be particularly good for a student intern or volunteer.
If you have experience in cataloging library books, have we got a job for you. Over the years, the Society has acquired a very fine collection of historic books and local resources. Not overwhelming, but several hundred that need the attention of a librarian. Our Museum and Archives cataloging software has a special section to accommodate books.
Projects to Do from Home
We have a couple of projects that can be done in the comfort of your home if you have a computer and internet. You may do as much or as little as you like.
The first project is putting names and dates in a spreadsheet so that we may have a complete list of everyone buried in our cemeteries. Name, dates, etc have been provided to us by the administrators of the cemeteries. The spreadsheet is very easy to follow and input goes quickly. Everything will be done in our online files so no special equipment or program is required. All you need is access to the internet! Training will be provided if need be. It will be a wonderful resource to offer genealogist.
The second project involves transcribing oral histories. We have an important collection of interviews that must be transcribed before the magnetic tape in the recording deteriorates. All information will be transcribed into our online files so no special equipment or program is required. All you need is access to the internet. Training will be provided, if needed. Tape player will also be provided.
