202 West Main Street (Parkway Theater)
202 West Main Street
This brick-veneered structural clay tile astylistic utilitarian building was erected as the Parkway Theater in 1923-24 (Village of Mount Horeb Tax Rolls). It is much altered. Built for Alfred Peterson, the building also housed a dance hall. The Parkway Theater hosted movies, lectures, and vaudeville shows. Leo Sutter and Gunnar Larson bought the property in 1951 and moved their electrical appliances business, Majestic Sales, into the building. That store was previously located at 216 West Main Street (extant), and the additional space in this building allowed them to expand Majestic Sales to include furniture and household furnishings. Hugo Fink converted the building into a tavern in 1970 (Mount Horeb Presettlement to 1986, p. 28). This property was owned by Alfred Peterson from 1923 until 1951, by Leo Sutter and Gunnar Larson from 1951 until 1970, by Forest Westfall in 1970, and by Hugo Fink from 1970 until at least 1985. In 1996, it was owned by Kenton and Jenny Lou Johnson (Village of Mount Horeb Tax Rolls). The Parkway Theater is not eligible for historic designation, but is a noncontributing element in the potential locally-designated Main Street Historic District. |
