212 West Main Street (John Johnson House)
212 West Main Street
This frame gabled-ell house was constructed for John Johnson in 1883 (Village of Mount Horeb Tax Rolls). It is very plain and has been aluminum sided; the enclosed porch is also an alteration. This house was owned by Johnson from 1883 until 1893, by Andrew Brattrud from 1894 until passing to his estate in 1900, and remained a part of Brattrud's estate until at least 1921. The property was owned by Al Goebel from at least 1925 until at least 1935, by Reuben Throndson from at least 1945 until at least 1975, and by Clara Throndson from at least 1980 until at least 1985. In 1996, the owners were John and Theresa Locher (Village of Mount Horeb Tax Rolls). The Johnson House is not individually eligible for historic designation. |
214 West Main Street (Osten Olson House)
214 West Main Street
This frame vernacular house was erected for Osten Olson in 1892 (Village of Mount Horeb Tax Rolls). A commercial vernacular storefront was added, perhaps around 1950. Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Whitson opened the first florist shop in this, their home in 1939 (Mount Horeb Presettlement to 1986, p. 28). The Whitsons were in business here until at least 1985 (Village of Mount Horeb Tax Rolls). In 1991, the whole building was gutted, and the frame rear addition constructed (Mount Horeb Mail, July 1991). This property was owned by Osten Olson from 1892 until 1899, by Jens Moen from 1900 until at least 1902, by Ingebret Moen from at least 1904 until at least 1910, by John Everson from at least 1915 until at least 1925, by Everson's estate from at least 1930 until at least 1935, and by Kenneth Whitson from at least 1939 until at least 1985. In 1996, it was owned by John and Debra Kvernen (Village of Mount Horeb Tax Rolls). This Olson House is not individually eligible for historic designation. |
216 West Main Street (Leo Sutter and Thorwald Komplien building/Majestic Sales Co.)
216 West Main Street
This astylistic utilitarian masonry building was erected for Leo Sutter and Thorwald Komplien in 1931, to house their electrical appliance business, the Majestic Sales Company (Mount Horeb Presettlement to 1986, p. 28). Komplien left the partnership in 1932, and Gunnar Larson joined in 1941 (Mount Horeb Mail, August 16, 1951). When the Majestic Sales Company moved to 202 West Main Street in 1951, the Pure Oil Company purchased this building and converted it into a gas station (Village of Mount Horeb Tax Rolls; Mount Horeb Presettlement to 1986, p. 28). Sigvart Nygard and Walter Scheidegger were the first to operate the station. Later operators were Richard Gudgeon, and then Donald Moyer. During Moyer's tenure, it was a Shell station. In 1969, Jergen Greve moved his dairy supply shop into this building. As late as 1985, there was a dairy supply store in the building, at the time operated by Gary Laufenberg (Mount Horeb Presettlement to 1986, p. 28). This property was owned by Leo Sutter from 1930 until 1951, by Pure Oil Company from 1951 until at least 1960, by Donald Moyer from at least 1965 until 1969, by Jergen Greve from 1969 until at least 1980, and by Gary Laufenberg since at least 1985 (Village of Mount Horeb Tax Rolls). The Sutter and Komplien Building is not eligible for historic designation. |
101 North Washington Street (William Ferris house)
101 North Washington Street
This frame side-gabled house was probably built for William Ferris in 1882, and given a Craftsman-influenced remodeling circa 1924 (Village of Mount Horeb Tax Rolls). The clapboards, which alternate narrow and wide widths, are characteristic of the Craftsman style. The six-over-six windows and the side-gable form suggest a nineteenth century building. The house retains good integrity. The property was owned by William Ferris from 1882 until his death circa 1915, and by Mrs. William Ferris until at least 1925. Leo Sutter owned the property from at least 1930 until at least 1970, and Esther Sutter owned it thereafter until at least 1985. In 1996, the property belonged to Daniel and Mary Eckstein (Village of Mount Horeb Tax Rolls). The Ferris House is not individually eligible for historic designation. |
