519 Springdale (Ted Aavang's Service Station)
Picture
Picture
519 Springdale Street
This contemporary building was built as Aavang's Service Station (Village of Mount Horeb Tax Rolls; Mount Horeb Presettlement to 1986, p. 27). Orville Aavang built a D-X service station on this site in 1937. He died in 1938, and his brother LaVerne took over the business. LaVerne Aavang had this building constructed in 1959. The service station was leased by Robert Oimoen from 1955 until circa 1980, when he bought it. It is currently owned by his son, Robert Oimoen, Junior (Mount Horeb Presettlement to 1986, p. 27; Village of Mount Horeb Tax Rolls). The Aavang Service Station is not eligible for historic designation.

521 Springdale Street (Arne Huseth/Christ Finke House) - demolished
Picture
521 Springdale Street
This frame gabled-ell house was built for Arne Huseth in 1893 (Village of Mount Horeb Tax Rolls; Mount Horeb Times, June 1, 1893). Huseth was a carpenter, and probably built the house himself. There is shingling in the gable ends, and on the wall of the front-facing gable. Although the house has lost its original porch posts and balusters, the replacements are very compatible with the historic character of the house. Christian Finke was a long-time resident of the house. Christian Finke was part-owner of the flour mill (demolished) that was located just north of the railroad tracks between First and Second Streets. Finke was in partnership with John Bohn in 1897, with Bohn and John Ward in 1901 through 1903, and with just Ward in 1905. Ward and Finke also ran the electric light plant from their mill in 1905. From 1907 through 1911, Finke worked alone. His son Clarence Finke joined him by 1913, and they continued the business until selling to J.C. Fjelstad circa 1916 (Wisconsin State Gazetteer and Business Directory; Sanborn-Perris Map of Mount Horeb). Arne Huseth owned this property from 1892 until 1896, Christian Finke owned it from 1896 until 1914, Herman Schwenn owned it in 1915, William Myrland owned it [in] 1916, Christian Froh owned it in 1920 and 1921, the John Brown estate owned it in 1925, Clyde Richardson owned it from at least 1930 until at least 1936, Walter Huber owned it from at least 1940 until at least 1945, Clifford Jewell owned it from at least 1950 until at least 1970, Henry Jewell owned it in 1975, Beverly Jewell owned it from at least 1980 until at least 1985, and in 1996 it was owned by Richardson. The Huseth/Finke House is not individually eligible for historic designation.

525 Springdale Street (KWIK Trip) -demolished, rebuilt at 521 Springdale
Picture
525 Springdale Street
This contemporary building was erected to house a Kwik Trip in 1986, and expanded in 1990 (building permit dated September 17, 1986; Village of Mount Horeb Tax Rolls). The property was owned by John Albert from at least 1975 until at least 1985, and by HRZ since at least 1989 (Village of Mount Horeb Tax Rolls). The Kwik Trip is not eligible for historic designation.
