Beaty SCHOOL
Vermont Township
|
3435 State Highway 78
|
District: 2
Notes: 1850's - 1944. A log building was built in early 1850's which continued until 1874. The first teacher Elizabeth Beaty's father, George Beaty, donated land for a new school. Many students used the school as well as some parents who wanted to learn to read and write. Most of the pupils were of Irish backgrounds.
The school remained in operation until 1944 when the Beaty School District No. 2 began to bus their students to Mt. Horeb. On August 12, 1954 the Beaty School District No. 2 was formally attached to the School District of the Village of Mt. Horeb changing its name to the Joint District No. 1 of the Village of Mt. Horeb and Towns of Vermont and Blue Mounds.
The schoolhouse itself was auctioned off in August, 1944 and is now located in Stoughton as a residence. The name is sometimes spelled Beatty School.
