Berg SCHOOL
District: 1, in the northwest quarter of the township.
Notes: 1856-1959. This was the first public school built in the township. Berg School was named for John (Hans) Berg, one of the earliest Norwegian immigrants to Springdale Township. In 1850 (circa.) a school district was formed in the northwest corner of the township and was designated District #1. In 1856 a schoolhouse was built on a portion of John Berg’s farm. In 1874 the building was moved to an adjacent parcel on the Halverson farm in Section 7 NE4NE4 which stood on higher ground.
It was later moved to the above location in Section 8. Alena Thompson was the first teacher. At one point the enrollment reached 50 pupils. The building remained in use for 103 years until the children were moved into the new multi-roomed Ridgeview School after district consolidation in 1958. The last teacher was Shirley Rhyner. The original Berg School was sold at auction and torn down in 1959.
