"Dig into History" Event Returns to Art Fair Weekend
Picture
The Mount Horeb Area Historical Society (MHAHS) invites all young Indiana Jones hopefuls to an outdoor archaeology workshop, to be held at the future site of the Heritage Center, 106 South Second Street (across from the Grumpy Troll Brew Pub), on Saturday, July 18, 2015 from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00p.m.

MHAHS’s free “Dig into History!” outdoor event will give children an opportunity to learn just what archaeologists do – and it doesn’t involve dinosaur bones, but it does include playing in the dirt!

Archaeology “dig stations” will be set up on the Heritage Center site, and museum staff and volunteers will be on hand to sign in participants and help them investigate stimulated archaeology sites.  Archaeologists-for-the-day will have the opportunity to excavate these site, then formulate a hypothesis about the artifacts they find, and what they can tell us about people and events of the past.

There will also be learning stations for further exploration of the science of archaeology. One station will explain the different types of materials archaeologists find in the Mount Horeb area, while another station will give kids a chance to reconstruct broken pottery. Finally, an informational booth provided by the Friends of Donald Park will share archeological finds and the stories they tell from this popular nearby outdoor destination.

Finally, MHAHS is pleased to announce that the event will boast a special guest—experienced flint knapper Gary Eldred, who will be on hand throughout the day to demonstrate the art of crafting stone tools, a common component of many aboriginal archaeological sites.

Hand-outs will summarize what participants have learned and allow for review and further discussion at home.

All activities will be geared towards children ages five to twelve.  Reservations are not necessary, with all activities and materials made available on a first-come, first-serve basis.

To accommodate expected high traffic associated with Mount Horeb Area Chamber of Commerce’s annual Art Fair, to be held the same weekend, the Mount Horeb Area Museum will have special extended hours on Saturday, July 18 of 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.  So make time after visiting the “Dig It!” site to stop by the Museum and its eclectic Gift Shop.
