INTERACTIVE MAP
This interactive map locates all the schools, churches, cheese factories, and cemeteries that once covered the hills of southwestern Dane county. The schools and cheese factories served the agrarian communities from the 1840s until the 1960s. More than 40 one-room schools, that dotted the countryside, were built and administered by local families for their children. In 1964 the schools were consolidated into three buildings in Mount Horeb.
Cheese factories made the dairy farms of this area possible. Centrally located within a constellation of farms, these factories turned out cheese that rivaled New York and Europe. Stricter sanitation regulations drove many out of business in the mid 1960s. Recently small cheese makers have re-appeared and are reviving the art of hand-made cheese.

The Mount Horeb Area Historical Society is pleased to be able to offer these resources as part of its mission to celebrate and preserve the rich heritage of the Driftless Area. This project was accomplished by a small group of dedicated volunteers and took over a year to complete. Thanks go to Merel Black, Brynn Bruijn, John Pare and Doug Norgord for hundreds of hours of time and talent in producing these interactive maps. We hope you enjoy them.
