102 South Grove (Peterson and Brannan sheet metal shop)
102 South Grove Street
This astylistic utilitarian concrete block building was erected to serve as the Mount Horeb School District bus garage in 1956 (Mount Horeb Presettlement to 1986, p. 27). The previous building on the site, erected sometime between 1915 and 1925, housed the (Olaus and Leonard) Peterson and (Joseph) Brannan sheet metal shop from 1925 until 1930 (The Mount Horeb Centennial Book, 1861-1961, p. 57, Sanborn-Perris Map of Mount Horeb). John Vilberg bought the property in 1930, it passed to his daughter Sylvan Vilberg Zwickey upon his death, and she sold it to the Village in 1948. It has been owned by the Village since that time. The Mount Horeb School District Bus Garage is not eligible for historic designation. |
104 South Grove (115 South Perry Street - Birrenkott/National Buick Auto Company)
104 South Grove Street
This astylistic utilitarian frame building may have been erected for John Birrenkott in 1913 (Village of Mount Horeb Tax Rolls), or could be an older building enlarged and remodeled by him in 1913. The building housed Birrenkott's National Buick Auto Company until at least 1925, and the Birrenkott Sales Company (Buick dealers) from at least 1928 until at least 1961 (The Mount Horeb Centennial Book, 1861-1961, p. 16). The Birrenkott family also sold agricultural implements up until 1959 (The Mount Horeb Centennial Book, 1861-1961, p. 71). The building went through a major alteration in 1978 (Village of Mount Horeb Tax Rolls, Mount Horeb Presettlement to 1986, p. 17). This property was owned by John Birrenkott from 1911 until at least 1925, by Birrenkott Sales Company from at least 1930 until at least 1950, by William Birrenkott (John's son) from at least 1955 until at least 1975, and by Beverly Buechner since at least 1980 (Village of Mount Horeb Tax Rolls). The Birrenkott building is not eligible for historic designation. |
201 West Front (Lee & Holum Grain Warehouse) - demolished
201 West Front Street
This side-gabled frame building was probably built in 1918 as a grain warehouse for the (Andrew) Lee & (Andrew) Holum feed mill (Sanborn-Perris Map of Mount Horeb; Village of Mount Horeb Tax Rolls). It was part of the Lee and Holum feed mill from about 1918 until 1925, when it became (Andrew) Holum and (Maurice) Rude feed mill. In 1936, Lloyd Robinson bought out Andrew Holum's interest, and the business became Rude and Robinson. In 1957, Maurice Rude sold his interest to Robinson (Village of Mount Horeb Tax Rolls). Robinson retired in 1976 (Mount Horeb Presettlement to 1986, p. 71). This shed is the only building remaining from the feed mill. The property was owned by Lee and Holum from 1918 through 1924, by Rude Brothers from 1925 until 1936, by Rude and Robinson from 1936 until 1957, by Lloyd Robinson from 1957 until at least 1965, by Mounds Agriculture Service in 1970, and by Alton Lust since at least 1975 (Village of Mount Horeb Tax Rolls). The Lee & Holum Grain Warehouse probably is not eligible for individual historic designation. |
202 West Front (James Kenny real estate office)
202 West Front Street
The front-gabled frame building was erected for James Kenney in 1918 (Village of Mount Horeb Tax Rolls). It has dropped siding and Craftsman double-hung sash windows. Kenney lived upstairs, and may have sold farm implements downstairs. Kenny sold farm machinery, sewing machines, sleighs, cutters and wagons (The Mount Horeb Centennial Book, 1861-1961, p. 45) from at least 1901 until at least 1905 (Wisconsin State Gazetteer and Business Directory). Kenney also sold real estate, and that was probably his primary business when this building was constructed. Dr. Frank W. Sutcliffe, who opened a veterinary office in the village around 1917, temporarily shared second-floor space in Kenney's real estate office in this building (The Mount Horeb Centennial Book, 1861-1961, p. 50). The building housed Alton Lust's trucking business beginning in 1944 and is now used for storage in Lust's auctioneering business. The property was owned by James Kenney from 1918 until at least 1930, by Theodore Jungenberg from at least 1935 until 1943, and by Alton Lust since 1944 (Village of Mount Horeb Tax Rolls). The Kenney Building probably is not individually eligible for historic designation. |
303 West Front (Sun Ray Redi-Gas Company) - demolished
303 West Front Street
Leo and Herman Sutter erected this astylistic utilitarian concrete block building to house Sun Ray Redi-Gas Company, a propane gas fuel business in 1958. Kenneth Ridpath, Selmer Christianson and Al McKay were later owners of the business (Village of Mount Horeb Tax Rolls; Mount Horeb Presettlement to 1986, p. 27). The owner of record was Sun Ray Redigas from 1955 until 1960, RediGas of Mount Horeb from 1961 until at least 1989, and in 1996 was Don's Dozing (Village of Mount Horeb Tax Rolls). The Sun Ray Redi-Gas building is not eligible for historic designation. |
